About Unity in Action:

Initiated by community leaders and volunteers who saw a need to support and guide the Latino community. Unity In Action was registered as a 501(c)(3) in May 2014. Local leaders gathered to form specialized committees in worker rights, immigration and civic engagement.

Our purpose is to support Latinos, immigrants, and local partners in accessing resources and promoting just and inclusive communities.

Our mission is to empower Latinos by promoting workers' rights, civic engagement and justice through education, training, and advocacy.

Description:

Unity in Action is serving Latinx and immigrant families in Siouxland by providing resources and promoting a just and inclusive community. We provide citizenship courses, workers’ rights training, social and networking events, and the largest Hispanic heritage festival in Siouxland – Celebrate Siouxland. We are seeking a program assistant to provide planning and administrative support. The role will support a variety of civic and immigrant related programs, projects, and special initiatives.

 

The program assistant at Unity in Action is expected to work alongside our program coordinator and community organizer to assist with events and programs throughout the year. Some of the events and programs could be, but are not limited to, Citizenship courses – virtual and in person, police Q&A town halls, worker rights training, and Celebrate Siouxland. The program assistant will also be responsible for providing excellent and welcoming customer service, as well as hosting, and creating new programs for our community.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in assigned mission advancement (e.g., outreach, fundraising, donor stewardship, etc.) activities.

  2. Assist in planning and organizing Unity in Action events, i.e.;

    1. Worker right training

    2. Citizenship courses in-person and virtual

    3. Power or Participation

    4. Voting and Civics events

    5. Town hall and Forums

  3. Participate in key community events to advance the mission of Unity in Action.

  4. Participate in the development and execution of a comprehensive and strategic 5 year plan.

  5. Assists with the strategic enhancement of relationships and partnerships with organizations, business, and other non-profits.

  6. Report to the Community Organizer and Program Coordinator.

  7. Attend bi-weekly staff meetings.

  8. Greet community members as they enter the building.

  9. Answer phone calls and respond to emails as needed. 

  10. Plan and organize new programming that will advance our mission. 

  11. Other duties as assigned.

 

Required:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusions

  • Experience organizing events and programming with a diverse community.

  • A passion for building community, equity, and empowering others.

  • Demonstrated autonomy and integrity.

 

 

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to understand cultural changes and their connection to community organizing.

  • Experience working in customer service or working with community members.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with skills in Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, and proficiency with Adobe Acrobat.

  • Experience scheduling and executing calls using various meeting forums (MS Teams, Zoom, etc.).

  • Formatting, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Strong oral and written communications skills.

  • Strong desk/online research and fact-checking skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Proven ability to take initiative, learn quickly, anticipate needs and challenges, and find solutions.

  • Demonstrated success working with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to prioritize and effectively manage time, tasks, and responsibilities.

  • Demonstrated success working effectively while under deadlines.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities.

  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.

  • Experience in workers’ rights, immigration, social work, event coordination and/or similar areas.

  • Experience working with external organizations, city chambers, councils, community members and leaders.

  • Teaching experience or similar area.

  • Experience working with immigrant communities and community engagement.

  • Experience fulfilling administrative duties.
